Winter Oil? No such thing! Here are the differences in Engine Oils.
The most essential thing that is used in a car service is the engine oil. It is the main lubricant that plays a vital role in the combustion engine.
Engine Oils are formulated for specific operating conditions. The base oils and additives typically used in engine, are blended to provide the desired lubricant performance. Using the correct oil for your engine will give you significant benefits such as smoother running, longer engine life and better return on your investment.Engine oils are a blend of two components – base oils and additives.The mix of additives is the key to the difference between making standard oil and one that offers significant performance benefits. What does 5W30 mean in engine oil?
The engine oil grade consists of 4 charactersThe "w" in motor oil stands for winter. The first number in the oil classification refers to a cold weather viscosity. The lower this number is, the less viscous your oil will be at low temperatures. 5W- motor oil will flow better at lower temperatures than a 15W- motor oil. The higher number, following the “w” refers to hot weather viscosity, or how liquid your oil is at hot temperatures. The higher the number, the thicker the oil at a specified temperature.
Mineral Engine Oil:
Mineral Oil is obtained from crude oil by refining. Ideally, the manufacturer manages to sort out the “bad” components and, if possible, leaves similar molecules only.
Semi Synthetic Engine Oil:
Semi Synthetic Oil also call Blend is a mixture between synthetic and mineral oil. The ratio varies and can be as little as 2% synthetic oil to 98% mineral oi.
Fully Synthetic Engine Oil:
Synthetic Oil is a designed product. The manufacturers “assemble” the molecular chains that have the desired properties.
Advantage of Synthetic Oil:
Synthetic oils have some advantages over mineral engine oil.They’re designed to be more effective at:
Resisting oil breakdown, which makes it last longer than mineral oil
Withstanding higher temperatures, which helps keep engines running longer
Flowing in cold temperatures, therefore reducing engine wear during frigid startups.
If you make lots of short trips, mineral engine oil may never get warm enough to burn off moisture and impurities that can accumulate. That could hasten the breakdown of conventional oil.Living in Winnipeg with very cold winters and hot summers, synthetic oil helps protect the engine from strain and won’t break down as quickly as mineral oil.
Even so, synthetic oils generally hold up better for more miles, regular oil changes remain important, and you shouldn’t wait beyond the time interval recommended, usually every 5000k or twice a year.
